Chapter Seventeen

It was almost completely dark when Ryan pulled into her drive. She got out and went around the truck to meet Katherine. “I have some white wine.”

“Nice.”

Ryan let Katherine go ahead of her to the door, partly because she was being polite, but mostly to watch Katherine walk to her door. She had a beautiful body.

In the kitchen, Ryan poured two glasses of a local New Mexican pinot grigio and passed one to Katherine. “This way.” She walked toward the patio and motioned to a redwood deck chair for Katherine, and she sat in the other.

They both stared over at the mountain at the same time. The neighbor’s house partially blocked it, but the view was still nice. Neither of them spoke for a moment.

“So you wanted to talk,” she said and took a sip of her wine.

“Um…well…I was hoping we could pick up where we left off here a couple of weeks ago,” Katherine said.

Ryan laughed a little, but the warm feeling in her middle emphasized how much she wanted that too. “Mmm. You know you’re blushing.”

Katherine covered her face with her hands, then finally peeked through her fingers. “I’m not usually so forward.”

“You know what you want. It’s a good thing.” She sipped again. Should she get up and take this beautiful woman to bed like she’d asked, or should she avoid making her desire to be with her even worse since she was leaving in a few hours?

“Yes.”

Katherine’s honest, confident tone was all it took to get Ryan moving. “Follow me.” She stood, picked up Katherine’s wine, and walked straight to her bedroom. “I think we were here.”

“Mmm-hmm.” Katherine took a step closer.

Ryan inhaled deeply and willed her pulse to slow. “Damn.”

Katherine’s smile wavered. “What?”

“You are so…” She swallowed hard, unable to find the words to tell Katherine how absolutely stunning she was. Instead, she pulled her through the door and kissed her. When she stroked Katherine’s tongue with hers, she had a flash of the fantasy she’d been running through her head since she’d left Katherine in her house thirteen days ago. In her fantasy, she took Katherine to her bedroom and made love to her before they said another word. She wanted the fantasy, but at the same time, she wanted to slow down and just be with Katherine. With an audible groan, she took a step back.

Katherine groaned too and leaned toward her, but finally the kiss was broken.

“Ahh…Maybe we should slow down,” she said.

Katherine shrugged and began looking around the small, neat bedroom.

She quickly filled the silence “It’s the same room I used to sleep in as a kid. I can’t bring myself to move into Mom’s. It’s bigger though. I did manage to take down all my posters of Anne Hathaway.” She laughed.

“Nice choice,” Katherine said and winked. Then she walked over to the dresser, where she lingered on some family photos—mostly of her and her mother playing golf. “May I take a look?”

She nodded and followed Katherine across the room, where she leaned closer to Ryan’s favorite picture of her mother.
